Moroccan POWs Released After 20 Years

Today 404 Moroccan prisoners of war were released by the Algerian backed Polisario Front:

POWs

Seems that Morocco and this Algerian backed group had a war 16 year ago over a patch of desert after the Spanish left it in 1975. The war ended with a cease fire in 1991 with Morocco in control of the desert they had been fighting over.

I don’t remember much about this Morocco vs. Polisario Front conflict, but how does a cease fire happen in 1991 but the prisoners don’t get returned/released until fourteen years later?

That sounds a bit harsh and unreasonable even in the worst and most bitter conflicts. Fighting over a piece of desert and then spending almost 20 years as a POW, that’s a really bad deal……………………………..
